EMDR is helpful in a range of conditions/issues including IBS, OCD, addictions, phobias and weight control.
EMDR, Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing, is an evidence based therapy approach which is ideal for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
Symptoms of PTSD can include flashbacks, flash-forwards, intrusive thoughts, fatigue, irritability, depression, anxiety, insomnia, emotional numbing, avoidance, memory problems, hyper-vigilance, hyper-awareness and an exaggerated startle response.
EMDR targets experiences, triggers and current symptomology through bilateral stimulation of the brain's hemispheres. EMDR does not rely on the client giving detailed descriptions of the incidents/events, which unlike other treatments, means that the client should not become re-traumatised during the treatment.
Using an 8-phase protocol; memories, thoughts, beliefs and stomatic (bodily) feelings will be reprocessed resulting in a desensitisation to emotions, thoughts and somatic symptoms.
When used in the treatment of PTSD, EMDR has been found in multiple studies to be as effective as some therapies, specifically Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and more effective than non trauma focused CBT.
EMDR can be quicker than some other commonly used therapies - this reduces the number of sessions required.
